The main Instructors (Sensei) st the club are Sensei Phil Smith 4th Dan, and Sensei Colin Jackson 2nd Dan, but many other Black belts and high grade brown belts assist whenever they can. Roffey Karate Club has produced over 20 Black Belts since it started in 2000. We have currently training at the club 14 of them. We have 6 2nd Dan black belts so the depth of knowledge and expertise is excellent.

Sensei Phil has trained in Wado Ryu karate for many years and has all the relevant checks including Enhanced CRB. Sensei Phil is a KARATE ENGLAND registered Coach and has been involved in teaching children since 1989 and has also taken child protection training and many National Coaching Foundation courses.

He is trained in other martial arts including Kung Fu and Tai Chi as well as some weapons systems. This level of expertise is used to ensure that all classes are inclusive, safe and enjoyable for all students.

Sensei Phil is qualified to teach the Advanced Certificate in Conflict Management Personal Safety and Self Defence a British Self Defence Governing Body qualification and runs Self Defence classes both at the club and for other organisations.

Sensei Colin has trained and taught at the club for many years and is currently looking forwards to trying for his 3rd Dan All the Instructors at the club have a similar approach which is to teach to a high standard whilst ensuring that above all your Karate training is enjoyable.

A normal class in the training hall ( DOJO) consists of warm ups, some stretching and exercise to improve fitness. This can consist of games for younger students (and sometimes the older ones) basic techniques and Kata. KATA training is a key element of karate and we practice consistently.(Kata is a series of moves in a predetermined sequence). All of the traditional katas are taught, some of which predate Wado Ryu by centuries, so the essence of training in a Martial Art can be appreciated. There are also many preset 2 person sequences in the Wado Ryu syllabus which need to be learned for gradings.
